Young John Rhoades KJ4EVN age 23 had just passed his technician test and was waiting for his call sign to be posted.

He was looking forward to going to his first hamfest later in the week. That would be the Silver Point hamfest in Silver Point, Tennessee that was scheduled for June 21, 2008.

On Thursday the 19th, an announcement was made that the club near Cookeville that had sponsored the Silver Point hamfest had disbanded and the one ham remaining, that was going to try to still open the doors, was called out of town.
It looked as if the Silver Point hamfest was going to be no more.

All the hamfest information was given to Matt Klimkowski - KG4WXX by Dave Sparks - N4OZO.

After Matthew talked with John, they both agreed to try and SAVE the Silver Point hamfest.

John with the help of his friends – Matt – 23, his brother David Kimkowski – 28 - KG4WXW, and friend Holly Misslin - KG4WXV all pulled together to host the hamfest.

Word was passed to Dr. Barrett owner of the TW Antenna Company located in Cookeville TN who said. “bring it on”  TW will sponsor the event!

Silver Point was back on!

John went and procured the community center while Matt, David and Holly went for plenty of hot dogs, hamburgers buns soda’s charcoal and the works.  Not a huge crowd came is it rained off and on all day long.

Some folks thought the hamfest had been called off. I am sure others didn’t like the $4.00 a gallon gasoline and stayed home. The group attending had a great time.

James Keeton W4SOH kept us on the edge of our seats working station after station on the TW2010 he had set up.  He was talking to stations all over including one in Costa Rica that was coming in like a local.

There was some buying, selling, swapping and trading going on and the food and admission was taken care of by TW Antenna’s. So John Rhoades KJ4EVN did indeed get to plan AND attend his first hamfest. This young group has already started planning the Silver Point ham fest for next year!

Sorry James we had your call incorrect!  It was a typo!
